As citizens in our own towns and cities, we vote and elect people to make decisions for us. But what happens when we disagree with the decisions they make? How do we intervene? Today, we will hear about an ongoing issue in Portland, Oregon about whether or not to fluoridate the city water. Since the 1940s, city officials have looked at health costs, especially for socio-economically challenged families, and seen how fluoridating water would save money over the life of residents in dental care. On today's program, we'll be talking with Rick North & Paul Connett, two experts against fluoridation in drinking water...but we also want to hear from you about the larger issue...how do we manage general welfare for the public and personal concerns when they may not be in sync? FIVE TIMES citizens have voted via ballot against fluoridation, overturning the city council, citing health concerns about fluoride. But the concern for childrens dental health remains. To what extent do we allow allow government control of our lives to manage the costs of long-term health care impacts?
